Hi-tech park work may begin before August 15

TIRUNELVELI: Work on the proposed hi-tech park in the anticipated Special Economic Zone at Nanguneri may commence before August 15, the Nanguneri MLA, H. Vasanthakumar, has informed.

He told reporters here on Friday that Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Dayanidhi Maran, who were so keen on establishing the hi-tech park at Nanguneri, were scouting for potential investors to create infrastructure facilities of all sorts to promote industrial activities in this rain-shadow region.

A minimum of Rs. 100 crore would be invested in the first phase of the project, which would require over Rs. 6,000 crore in several phases to provide employment opportunities to thousands of skilled unemployed youths.

Initially, Rs. 88 crore would be spent to create drinking water facilities.

Colour television sets, to be distributed freely by the State Government, would be received here at knocked down condition and assembled in the plant to be set up at Nanguneri, he said.

"The government, which has drawn norms to be followed in finalising suppliers of TV sets, has sent the Industries Secretary to China in this connection," Mr. Vasanthakumar said.

Showing banana flower pickle, de-hydrated banana and banana syrup, being manufactured by a Chennai-based company, to the reporters, he said a plant to manufacture value-added products of banana would come up at Nanguneri after imparting training to local youths, "as Nanguneri Assembly segment has a huge banana market at Thiruvenkatanathapuram, popularly known as Sirumalanji".

He said the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister Kamaraj would be celebrated at Valliyoor on July 15.

"A massive rally would be taken out from Nanguneri to Valliyoor through Kalakkad and Ervadi, in which good number of decorated vehicles, highlighting the achievements of the UPA Government at the Centre, would be taken out.

General secretary of the Congress Veerappa Moily would address the public meeting to be held at Valliyoor in the evening.

Welfare measures such as tri-cycle to handicapped persons, hearing-aids, sewing machines, wet grinders, pesticide sprayers, iron boxes, free cycles with tea flasks etc. to the tune of several lakh would be disbursed on the occasion," he said.

Inter-school essay competitions in three categories would be conducted as part of the celebrations, Mr. Vasanthakumar said
