LAUNCHING OF VASANTH TV

Dear Sir,
We understand that Vasanth TV would be launched in August 2007. I would appreciate if you can advise whether the service will be launched on Insat 2E Zonal beam or Wide beam. It would be nice if the service is provided via Insat 2E wide beam, so that people like us living in Australia would be able to view the channel.

Could you please let me know the frequency of the channel & also the date of the launch?

Wish you all the best with your venture.

Thanks & regards
M.Chandra

It’s raining channels in TN

CHENNAI: Television channels with unabashed political affiliations are proliferating in Tamil Nadu. While Kalaignar TV, a channel from the Raj Television Network and named after Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, will start beaming on September 15, two pro-Congress channels will join the fight for eyeballs soon.

In fact, all the Tamil channels offering news bulletins have been identified with or owned by political parties. Sun TV, Sun News and now Raj TV have been pro- DMK and Jaya TV has been the political loudspeaker of AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa, while Makkal TV is owned by the S Ramadoss-led PMK.

The two new channels to be launched are Mega TV (on August 20) of Congress MP KV Thangabalu and Vasanth TV owned by Congress MLA and retail giant Vasantha Kumar.

While Raj TV managing director M Raajhendhran maintains that Kalaignar TV will be unbiased in its news presentation, the two Congress leaders are not so pretentious. "I cannot disassociate with the Congress and my channel will highlight the achievements of the UPA government," says Thangabalu. "However, the channel will have its own identity in preserving Indian culture and articulating regional concerns," adds Thangabalu.

Besides six news bulletins in Tamil and two in English everyday, Mega TV will have the usual entertainment mix. "Mine will not be a pro-Congress channel, laughs Kumar, "it will be a pro-Sonia Gandhi channel."

Vasanth TV, too, will be a news and entertainment channel with a mix of mega serials, film-based programmes and game shows. Kumar has a strong logic to predict his advertisement revenue: "Being the owner of a retail chain (Vasanth & Co), I have been doing business with 220 manufacturers. will come from them."

Despite the split between the Karunanidhi and the Marans, the Maran-owned Sun Network, albeit temporarily, continues to support the DMK.  With the state government  proposing to launch its own cable distribution system, the channel war may just get an additional dose of politics.

More Tamil TV Channels for the Idiot Box

Chances are you've never seen or even heard of some of these: Sun TV, Sun News, Sun's K TV, Raj TV, Raj Digital Plus, Star's Vijay TV, Doordarshan's Podhigai, Jaya TV, Tamilan TV, Tamil Thirai TV, Imayam TV, Win TV, Makkal TV. That's 13 Tamil Channels in all, unlucky number and over crowded you think? Well there are more on the way!

In spite of claims of political neutrality we had two channels which were virtual mouth pieces of the two major parties in the state. While the Jaya TV remains very much pro AIADMK, Sun TV having fallen out of favour with the DMK party is all set to be replaced by Kalaignar TV.

Launched a few month back PMK's Makkal TV takes their party's Tamil language ideas seriously. Yesterday night in their news bulletin they were actually referring to the ball-point pen in Tamil, I better not make a fool of myself trying to spell out the word I've never heard before.

There's so much news doing the rounds about Kalaignar TV, it's difficult to separate the rumours from the truth but the channel's launch on September 15 will answer all the questions. It's probably the most anticipated TV channel right now and is expected to give Sun TV a run for it's money.

The Congress like in Politics is going to be divided in the media space too :P A Congress MP's 'Mega TV' is all set to start beaming into your home on August 20, the channel which will have it's symbol as a Hand claims it will not explicitly support any political party (Yeah, we fell for that!), In another 1-2 months another Congress legislator's ' Vasanth TV' which is also expected to adopt a pro-Congress line will also be launched.

Hi-tech park work may begin before August 15

Says Nanguneri MLA H. Vasanthakumar

TIRUNELVELI: Work on the proposed hi-tech park in the anticipated Special Economic Zone at Nanguneri may commence before August 15, the Nanguneri MLA, H. Vasanthakumar, has informed.

He told reporters here on Friday that Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Dayanidhi Maran, who were so keen on establishing the hi-tech park at Nanguneri, were scouting for potential investors to create infrastructure facilities of all sorts to promote industrial activities in this rain-shadow region.

A minimum of Rs. 100 crore would be invested in the first phase of the project, which would require over Rs. 6,000 crore in several phases to provide employment opportunities to thousands of skilled unemployed youths.

Initially, Rs. 88 crore would be spent to create drinking water facilities.

Colour television sets, to be distributed freely by the State Government, would be received here at knocked down condition and assembled in the plant to be set up at Nanguneri, he said.

"The government, which has drawn norms to be followed in finalising suppliers of TV sets, has sent the Industries Secretary to China in this connection," Mr. Vasanthakumar said.

Showing banana flower pickle, de-hydrated banana and banana syrup, being manufactured by a Chennai-based company, to the reporters, he said a plant to manufacture value-added products of banana would come up at Nanguneri after imparting training to local youths, "as Nanguneri Assembly segment has a huge banana market at Thiruvenkatanathapuram, popularly known as Sirumalanji".

He said the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister Kamaraj would be celebrated at Valliyoor on July 15.

"A massive rally would be taken out from Nanguneri to Valliyoor through Kalakkad and Ervadi, in which good number of decorated vehicles, highlighting the achievements of the UPA Government at the Centre, would be taken out.

General secretary of the Congress Veerappa Moily would address the public meeting to be held at Valliyoor in the evening.

Welfare measures such as tri-cycle to handicapped persons, hearing-aids, sewing machines, wet grinders, pesticide sprayers, iron boxes, free cycles with tea flasks etc. to the tune of several lakh would be disbursed on the occasion," he said.

Inter-school essay competitions in three categories would be conducted as part of the celebrations, Mr. Vasanthakumar said

H.Vasanthakumar, MLA, addressing Traders’ Cell State Conference at Marthandam,

Letter to Congress Workers from Madam Sonia..

Soniagandhi.jpg
Dear Friends,

In a recent talk that I gave in the Netherlands, I pointed out that one of the things we are most proud of in India is our democracy. I also pointed out that one of the reasons that our democracy holds and has continued to be stable, is because it is representative not just of its people but of India's pluralist, diverse and rich cultural heritage. This is something that the Congress Party has always stood by and our commitment to the nation and to its people is constantly demonstrated through our policies at the Centre and in the States. The UPA government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has made inclusive development its goal. For the Congress Party this means bringing in all those groups and regions that lag behind. The Congress Party is committed especially to empowering women and we have passed significant legislation such as the Domestic Violence Bill and the Reform of the Hindu Property Bill in the past three years. We have once again reached a historical milestone in nominating, through a consensus amongst the UPA allies, a woman candidate, Smt. Pratibha Patil as our Presidential nominee. This proves that no post, howsoever high in the country, is beyond the reach of its women, who have contributed significantly and continue to contribute in making India proud.

The victory of the Congress-NCP alliance in Goa has once again proved that Congress Party's agenda of inclusive growth and social harmony continues to find favour with the people of the country. We want to congratulate our Party workers for their hard work and dedication in leading the fight against the communal and corrupt forces represented by the BJP. The Party must continue to ensure that it practices good governance and that the needs of the people are met and their grievances heard and speedily addressed.

While we are proud of the role being played by our private entrepreneurs and the GDP growth of our country, we must not forget that there

still exists great disparity in India. Education, health and basic infrastructure still lags behind in our rural areas. The UPA government's focus

on rural and agricultural revitalisation is, therefore, not mere populism, it is the basis on which economic growth can be made to reach the

masses. As I said recently in a rally in Gujarat, the Opposition too must stop being partisan and ensure that all the policies for the agricultural

sector of the UPA government are implemented in states currently ruled by them and the funds made available properly utilised. Partisan and

narrow-minded politics only makes the people of the state suffer and denies them the fruits of development. This fight against poverty, as

the Prime Minister recently pointed out, has to be fought collectively by the private sector, civil society and the government working together.

This is an issue that must cut across party lines.

Finally, I would like to share with our readers the success of our Party's mission to commemorate 2nd October, Mahatama Gandhi's birthday

as the International Peace Day. This decision was recently passed by the members of the United Nations and will serve as an important

reminder of peaceful resistance as an alternative to violence in combating social injustice in all forms. We would like to thank our international

friends for their support and hope that the 2nd of October will lead to greater peace and harmony in the world.

Users Comments

Sir/ Madam,

Since Vasanth & Co is No.1 in commercial Home appliance selling in the market world. Good thing to heard that they are willing to come into Tamil satellite channels. If the competition is increased, automatically the quality of the product/deliverable will increase. Among all tamil channels Vijay TV provides good/quality/useful programs.

So it's a challenge for Vasanth & Co to compete with Vijay TV for quality programs. At the same time to compete with Sun TV for political struggles.

Thanks & Rgds

Vasanth & Co to launch Vasanth TV

Vasanth & Co, India's largest consumer durable retail network, is set to step into entertainment zone with the launch of Vasanth TV, a Tamil entertainment television channel. The channel is expected to go on air in August, 2007.

The channel will air a variety of programmes for the entire family, including films, games shows as well as news bulletins. The company intends to invest Rs 30 crore-Rs 40 crore over the next two years.

"The channel will be a 24-hour entertainment channel catering to all segments of viewers. It will also have regular news bulletin", Vasanth & Co Media Network managing director H Vasanthakumar said.

The launch of a television channel will also help expand the company's consumer durable retail network. Vasanth & Co has achieved the status of being the number one retail network in terms of sales, for several consumer durable brands over the past several years, he said.

"Part of this success was achieved through aggressive advertising campaign frequently carried out by us on print, outdoor and television. With a good programming mix, we are confident of ensuring a good reach for the channel, which will also be primarily used to run our own advertising campaign." Vasanthakumar says.

The company has tied up with VSNL for providing the uplinking facilities. It is likely to be launched on August 20, 2007, the birth date of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. Vasanthakumar is also a Congress legislator in the Tamil Nadu assembly, having been elected from the Nanguneri constituency in the May, 2006 elections.

He said, Vasanth & Co is now a 44-retail outlet consumer durable chain, with presence in Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Bangalore. "Over the next six months, we will be entering the Kerala market and we intend to add another 10-15 outlets by the end of this year," he added.

Vasanth & Co has a sales target of Rs 500 crore for the current fiscal 2007-08. Last year, its sales turnover was close to Rs 400 crore.
